Detox 2014 :: Learning

Survived Phase 2!
Survived might be a bit strong as I didn't feel that deprived or bored with food options this time.

And now we are half way through the final phase.

Here's what I'm noticing... {in no particular order}

  • Cherry tomatoes are very sweet
  • Almonds are also sweet and savory.
  • I.love.smoothies.
  • We need to have more healthy snacks around and available - my favorites so far: nut mix, dried mangoes, (any type of mango in general...), dates etc.
  • If I have a good snack about 3pm (apple + almond butter) then I am not 'starving' when I get home and can put something together instead of grabbing the instant boxes
  • This year's detox has been really good - I haven't felt so restricted and upset about all the food I can't have (hello last year) and I'm not completely petrified about what to eat post-detox because I don't want to mess up feeling so good (hey there, first year). This year feels a lot more in balance. Getting toward the end and ready to go back to more variety and options, but also okay that we're still in the middle of Phase 3.
  • Potatoes are really best with butter and ranch...
  • I'm pretty sure 95% of commercials are about food {I'm craving a McDonald's chicken nugget so bad right now}
  • I'm also craving Mexican food and am stoked about trying this recipe.
  • I kind of loath meal planning -- any tips anyone?!? How do you decide what to have for dinner?!

Detox 2014 :: When It's a Monday

This could also be tied to the misconceptions or pre-conceived notions about a detox, (including my own)!
What happens when a Monday hits full force?
How will you have the energy to stay afloat? Keep your marbles together?

We are encouraged to continue exercising as normal -- we should be plenty nourished so that shouldn't be an issue, make sure to hydrate and go!

Except, I didn't really believe that as I too felt like I am not getting "enough", not that I'm hungry, just a mental block because there is a lot on the "No" list. I've been doing a quick yoga routine when I get home, but not much else (mostly due to time).

Enter this morning -- a bit chaotic, not enough time, smoothie made, bag full of the entire produce isle ready to get me through this week and out the door. Find parking space. Run down and wait for train. See train light waaaaaay off in the distance and instantly remember smoothie (which is the whole reason I was running late) is in the car.

Oh what to do.

I really really needed that smoothie...or it was going to be an even longer day.
Run! Run with approx. 50 pounds of fruits and vegetables back to the car. Contemplate going home and forgetting it all. Contemplate crying. Grab smoothie then RUN...run....train pulls up and I'm still in the garage RUNNING. Down the steps *don't fall* *don't fall* don't fall* Leap onto the still-open door on an empty platform before they shut and off we go. Who doesn't need to get their lungs burning, muscles shaking and sweat pouring by 7 in the morning? Good thing I forgot my natural deodorant on the kitchen counter...definitely didn't need to reapply or anything.

Foreshadow for the busy busy day which included Sarah's baby shower. My perfect plan to eat my lunch and stuff myself with "Yes List" snacks before heading up so as not to starve and drool as people enjoy lunch went well: crazy day, unforeseen issues and before you know it I am running (again) to help set up without any "pre" lunch or snacks (except for the SMOOTHIE. Thank goodness for the smoothie. Good call for marathon training to get that smoothie).

Usually when I haven't eaten and am around food I'm famished and want to sneak tastes every five seconds (quality control people), or I am somewhat lethargic and can't really be of much help because FOOD can we please just EAT already? But my energizer bunny button was on. And I managed to sneak a bowl of salad sans dressing was put on and happily ate with the cheerful gang of guests.

Lunch:
Lettuce
Red peppers
Cilantro
Squeezed fresh lemon juice on top

Actually really delicious and refreshing! Plus I ate my weight in strawberries, pineapple and mango. I seriously love fruit! I surprised myself. I wasn't overcome with cravings for the bread or cake like I thought I would be. I was quite satisfied with the lunch I did put together (I first looked at the bowl of lettuce and was skeptical).

Someone mentioned at the shower that they were on a detox too, a friend chimed in that I was on one and the person looked at me (slender in stature) and commented "Why do you need a detox?!" Back to the misconceptions that the sole purpose is to lose weight. (Again, not my purpose or plan and not how this one is set up).

I made it through the long day without feeling the heavy weight that usually settles on my shoulders. Or feeling deprived at the party. Or collapsing after some intense aerobic exercise (ok ALMOST collapsing...but that adrenaline running to catch public transportation is no small task any day of the year...)

So, Day 3 of Phase 2: by jove, I think it's working!

10 on 10 :: May 2014

Today was a bit slow
Lots of messes
And still relishing that this space is ours.

{01}
I woke up with Nick wrapped around me and these two piled on top - cozy Saturday morning, and I had to capture Roscoe's smile.

{02}
Day #6 of the detox...today begins Phase 2 -- only fruits and vegetables! This smoothie was much improved with the 100% cherry juice and frozen mango.

{03}
Always in a patch of sunshine

 {04}

{05}

{06}

{07}
Unpacked a few more boxes today

{08}
I sort of made a potato paste with seasoned mushrooms mixed in as we can't overdo it with oil, but it was still tasty

{09}
Still working on those messes...

 {10}
Finishing with devotions

So thankful for a quiet Saturday to continue to settle in. Linking up with Rebekah!

Detox 2014: Week 1

Well, tomorrow is the final day of Phase 1 before moving into Phase 2 which consists of just fruit and vegetables. A quick glance at what we've been eating these past few days:

Breakfast:
- Oatmeal with blueberries, cinnamon, rice milk and a dab of raw honey

Lunch:
- Quinoa, brown rice and black beans mixed with cucumber, cherry tomatoes, avocado sprinkled with lime

Dinner:
- Protein powder shake with frozen fruit, kale, spinach, coconut milk, strawberries and a banana. We usually use a mix of two powders (one that tastes a bit better and one that help ramp up the detox) and the better-tasting one is on back order...really hoping it arrives before Phase 2 where more smoothies happen...it's a bit chalky at the moment.

Snacks:
- Raw nut mix with dried mango and raisins
- Dried apple and mango slices
- Apple with almond butter (unsalted)

Overall, I've felt good this first week! It's been a crazy one too. Work has switched into full speed ahead and there's a deluge of information, projects and problems that have sort of exploded and I've made it through each day with some energy to spare. I only had a slight headache the first day so weaning off the caffeine definitely paid off!

As for the other goals along with just the nutrition side of things I wanted to also "detox" my after work routine. Now that I am not commuting 5-6 hours a day (yeah, I know, insane) I am re-learning how to use 'free' time and so far I've come up with watching Netflix until it's too late, not getting as much sleep, waking up and scrambling because nothing's done. Thus, the "routine detox" has prompted:

  • A quick and easy yoga routine each night when I come home to help me relax and also get the blood flowing.
  • Working at least a half hour on chores and to-do's (a little bit goes a long way)
  • Limiting TV and iPad games (aka no iPad games and TV for Wednesday night Survivor and Thursday night Grey's Anatomy :) )

Things I am still working to add for Phase 2 and finally 3:

  • Get back to my gratitude journal / regular devotions
  • Take more pictures - continue playing with the DSLR, something I love
  • Read more
And with that, today was a looooong day at work and I need to let it go...and get ready for tomorrow (TGIF)!

Spring Detox 2014 : Misconceptions

When I tell people I'm on a detox I get all sorts of funny looks.
I'm realizing the words "cleanse" and "detox" come with lots of pre-conceived notions and sometimes fear and disgust - or at least the phrase "wow - I could never do that!"

Except you could.
And I am not currently surviving on limited calories and liquid.

Therefore, based on conversations I've had and questions I've been asked here are a few misconceptions about what I'm doing for the next 15 days.

Disclaimer: I am NOT a health professional, there are lots of different varieties of detoxes and cleanses and I encourage you to research and talk to your health care professional if you have questions...the answers below are based on my experience and the detox I am following through my naturopath!

Misconception 1: You will not be able to stray too far from a bathroom for the next 15 days...

I have never experienced this while on the detox. However, I can sympathize with the fear because I know that feeling...that feeling that creeps up and then demands NOW or FIVE MINUTES AGO and you lose all color in your face and your heart races because you are just not sure how you are going to survive this and haven't mastered denying the law of physics. Yeah I've had that after a big ol' loaded hotdog or indulging in cheese enchiladas and refried beans and rice at that questionable, but loved Mexican restaurant down the street.
As for fruits and veggies? They kind of help you out.

Misconception 2: I don't want to always be hungry!

Good! Me neither!
My naturopath said: "If you are hungry: EAT! Just choose options on the "Go To" list and not the "Leave" list - so far my snacks have consisted of a raw nut mix with dried mangos-no sulphurs or added sugars- & raisins. Dried mango. Fresh mango (I really love mango...but go easy or see misconception #1). Apple with unsalted almond butter. Misc fresh fruit / veggies. And on the list that are a few favorites when I'm craving salty: kale chips (easy on the sea salt) and sweet potato fries (drizzle a little bit of olive oil, a few sprinkles of sea salt and bake!) The particular protein powder we're using has 32 grams of protein per serving, plus I am full with fruits and veggies and in the last two days I've actually grabbed a bit too much for lunch / dinner as I am full before the plate is licked clean. I even skipped dessert last night (medjool dates...yummmm!) and I love those, but I was too full to think about eating more!

Misconception 3: I don't have the discipline to do that.

Sure you do! But, it helps to know exactly what you're getting into and have a solid reason why.
What it does require is planning ahead and a bit of time. Work gets busy, week nights slip away before you blink and weekends are full of everything else that couldn't get stuffed into Monday thru Friday and the only way the detox is going to be beneficial to you is if you allow enough planning and time to follow it reasonably well (hey, we all need some grace!) And the detox is not meant to last for ever, it's not sustainable or healthy - but 15 days? You can do it. But this involves planning meals a week in advance, shopping for said meals a week in advance, cooking it up in a big batch, setting out breakfast and lunch and having snacks on hand. Or, when all else fails head to the PCC deli - they've got lots of goodies that will fit the bill. Does this mean it comes easy? No - you have to work at it so you do have to be motivated, but don't discount your focus and determination: it's in there!

Misconception 4: Detox/cleanse is only to lose weight.

There are some that are probably designed or marketed for this purpose, but not this one. This one is to do as it says - help remove toxins from your body! Give yourself a fresh start and create some new habits that give your liver a break. That being said, some do lose weight and there are a few things to tweak if you want to add that to the experience...but that is not my goal.

So why am I doing this (for the third year in a row)?
Because it feels a bit like spring cleaning. Emerging from the fog of winter - dusting the cobwebs and clearing out space with the spring sunshine in anticipation of warm summer days. In the winter I tend to slump into a few habits that don't treat my body as kindly. The convenience of boiling pasta, toasting frozen waffles and microwaved instant food just doesn't give me the energy or make me feel the same. Remembering to slow down again and prepare and enjoy food and use it as fuel, not an anvil you drag around behind you. And hopefully a few of those healthy habits to rub off and stick around until Thanksgiving and the holidays hit again :)  And these reasons too.

Spring Detox :: 2014

Cycles and rhythms and even though this year is all sorts of topsy-turvy, I've been craving this tradition to come around again...it's detox time!

Nick and I have participated with out naturopath the last two years. Year one was GREAT (!!), year two was tough. I'm curious what year three will be considering all there years have three very different circumstances.

But I feel a bit more prepared this year, excited, and even weaned off coffee this week...

A few 'pre' thoughts before the cleansing begins:

  • I feel like my body needs a re-set. Bad habits. Lots of carbs and sugar and stress-eating lately which usually results in cheetos and cheerios as my main diet staples. I know my body is craving fruits and veggies, but I have felt too overwhelmed to do much about it except pop another waffle in the toaster and reach for the syrup. Hoping to regain some cooking / eating habits that fuel me instead of keep me lethargic
  • And on that note... I'm hoping this helps the lethargy and fatigue that have seeped in deep. I know what I'm feeding my body is part of the problem but I am a whole being which means there are emotions and thoughts and muscles all tangled up. Part of my goal is not just detoxing on the cellular level...but mind, body and soul. Setting a new rhythm.
  • And as part of that reaching those goals I plan to keep record of it here -- helps me process those jumbled thoughts, keep record of good recipes and how I feel throughout.

Alright cleansing drinks, teas, good nutritious food and protein shakes -- you and me have a date for the next 15 days.

[Week 21] Detox Debrief

And today is officially the last day of the detox.
Oh my word, I made it.
(OK - moment of honesty, I actually wrote the above two sentences on Tuesday in anticipation for this post and so that I wouldn't indulge in the chocolate-stuffed croissants from Le Panier that were screaming my name... it felt nice to say "I made it" and in order to "make it" that meant no croissant...yet...)

This is the second year Nick and I have done a detox (I wrote about it herehere and here last year) and it was such a positive, wonderful experience. This year has been a bit more difficult - I don't feel as clear and collected and ENERGIZED and GREAT as I did last year. I feel good, but not bouncing-off-the-walls great. And I think it boils down to a few different things:

  • Last year was 15 days, this year we tried for the full-blown 21. Just so you know, 21 days is a LOOONG time.
  • This year there is a very big life-altering move happening in a mere month
  • This year Nick and I are on opposite schedules which meant I was on my own for dinner...the hardest meal for me.
The naturopath we do this with has been really encouraging and as I shared that I seemed to be an emotional train-wreck toward the end (on the verge of tears, or on the verge of throwing chairs at anyone who blinked at me wrong, back to tears, then just a lot of anxiety and being upset) she reminded me that detoxing can actually bring out emotions more poignantly than at other times. That forced me to take a step back and just look at what was bubbling to the surface through this process that I didn't even realize I'd stuffed down there! It's good to know that I'm feeling more anxiety and upheaval at our upcoming move than I was willing to admit. Because now I can deal with it (and NOW i can deal with it with a large pint of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream! Kidding! Sort of.)

The 'Down Low' on our Detox:
On the "no" list:
Alcohol
Dairy
Caffeine (I realized I don't miss the caffeine, but I am aching without the ritual of coffee and black tea! The smell! The taste! The ease into the morning! And dandelion detox tea is just not the same.)
Wheat
Sugar
Processed foods

On the "yes" list:
all the fruits and veggies (and most of the time, nuts and brown rice and beans) you could want! Along with our cleansing drink (benonite clay and acacia powder with 100% juice) and our protein shakes (from the naturopath).

In conclusion: glad I did it, I'm sure my poor, over-worked liver is thankful I did it and ready to adopt some of the habits we've made (not so scared of all the fruits and veggies out there) more healthy choices and as always, grace with it all. The one upside is this time last year I was panicking about going off the detox and back to normal eating and this time I'm like WHERE is the loaded baked potato with sauteed mushrooms, melted cheese and ranch dressing!
