De-Tox vs. Anderson: Day 2

Well, it is officially day 2 of the Anderson DeTox.
a.k.a. Nick and I have sworn off caffeine, alcohol, white flour, dairy, sugar and processed foods for the next 15 days. I was daunted and excited about this and am hopeful that we'll make some permanent changes and feel better.

Initial thoughts:

  • Cleansing drink: the bentonite clay tastes just fine with juice...except the chia seeds are a bit awkward and stick to the cup...
  • Protein shake: I found it quite delicious with rice milk (unsweetened), berries and a banana. And incredibly filling -- thought I would eat lunch on top of that but it felt like a 10-course meal!
  • Dinner was...interesting, but not terrible! (Which is good because it's kind of our staple for the next 3 weeks.) Brown rice, lentils and black beans. I sprinkled lime juice all over, added cilantro and avocado and it was pretty good! Though, it smelled like dirt - a strong earthy smell, which was weird as I was eating but as I reflect now, kind of encouraging as I think my nose is much more attuned to the salt, MSG and processed sugar I usually indulge in.
  • I'm learning to like the teas. They have a strong flavor, but not bad. Plus with a touch of lemon or honey it's tasty.
  • Just plain old oatmeal is not my favorite. I keep trying to jazz it up but nothing quite replaces the heaping piles of brown sugar I usually adorn it with. This morning I added honey, blueberries and some cinnamon for a bit more flavor and was pleasantly surprised.

I feel a bit foggy today and yawning away (smells of coffee wafting around the office aren't quite doing the trick), but overall I feel good about this. Nick and I have varying goals with trying this out - hopefully jump-starting better eating habits (learning to love our veggies over anything else), less dependent on breads and pastas, candy and pastries and give our hard-working liver a break.

April was a busy month so it feels good to slow down. (And did I mention we get to end every night in the sauna?! So good.)
