Learning Lately

Be Still.

I don't understand God. I don't understand how you want me to stand here watching the tornado approach. The destruction. The wind. The terror. The unknown.

I don't understand.

Which is why you find me cowering and screaming WHY does there have to be a tornado?? WHY not sunshine? Blue sky?

And God gently whispered.

"Child. Be Still does not mean Stand Still. By all means, MOVE. Go. Follow me. Don't watch as the tornado picks you up and throws you. Do something. And in the middle of it all be still. My inexplicable peace and hope in the middle of the tornado is what being still is."

Oh.

I wait for the LORD, my soul waits. And in His Word, I hope.

Oh How The Garden Grows

I'm new to this gardening thing.
First time we've had space to envision and plant and go for it.
A few years ago I was excited to have an "apartment balcony garden" growing lettuce and peppers and tomatoes. That lasted a whole 3 days before we were notified the apartment complex was replacing all of the balconies and they would be not be accessible for the entire summer. Neat.

So last spring I skipped into Home Depot and picked out all the pretty colors (okay, apparently I only saw pink) without an ounce of an idea what I was doing.

I didn't know what this summer would bring and I certainly didn't know the lessons in the garden that would so strikingly fit these crazy last few months. So as they continue to unfold I want to remember them. Through the gracious, growing plants, God is teaching me a bit about this roller coaster.

The beginning.

I loved these bright pink exotic (to me) blooms!

The excitement of a fuschia! And the tried and true geranium.

And this pink explosion couldn't be passed up. I inherited the green plant thingy (that's its official name, I promise). And aren't those little impatients so cute?
I also grabbed some snap-dragons which have always been a favorite.
And of course a hydrangea starter because hydrangeas have captured by heart. They sing out JOY! and they are one of my favorites.

The verdict?
The whole pretty pink corner with my exotic choices died a sad, brown death.
Over-watering? Too much sun? Not enough?

Probably a bit of neglect as I planted and then proceeded into what was (still is) one of the most stressful, busy, overwhelming summers yet. Watering plants? I have plants?
Watering myself? Who has time for that?!

Apparently if you don't make time, you wither and brown and all the exotic pinkness of life gets hidden.

And then, sometimes, you want to cling to the exotic pinkness and God has tugged gently and said "let that go..."
There's still a sadness to see the large pot full of dirt, now empty.

The other side of the garden?
BURSTING at the seams.
The pink thing is a bit cumbersome, but all of a sudden it started growing UP. This succulent type leafage reaching for the sky.
Unexpected.

The cute little impatients? They had big dreams and grew!
Spread their petals and you can hardly tell they are in pots.
Exponential growth.
And snap-dragons?
Also grew UP and OUT and I needed a bigger pot...
Underestimated.

Also, fuschias? Those are hanging plants.
Once it was in its element that thing thrived and bloomed.
Sometimes you just find that you're in the wrong spot.
Same dream, same effort - different spot and all of a sudden there's fruit to your growing.
But you have to listen and be willing to go to that new spot.

(Notice the brown withering plant down on the left? I tried to bring it to this side to see if it would be encouraged by all the growth over here... it did eventually come back and bloom. But lost its battle after a few days of heavy rain. Sigh.)

I also inherited some rose bushes (which I've never tended before).
I was excited about this pink one as I didn't do much of anything and it bloomed the most.

The ones along the back are tall and lanky and produced a few roses.
And some tall, sporadic green blades of thick grass sprouted at the roots of the lanky rose bushes.
It looked a bit odd, but I just felt that they were something other than grass blades gone wild.
We received a notice from our HOA that referenced the back as "ugly" (!). And needed to be fixed right away. (How's that for a confidence boost?)

But I was stubborn and left these blades growing until mid-July.
I looked out and these wild orange blooms appeared.

Don't be so quick to judge.
As usual, patience and waiting are needed.
I have no patience nor any desire to wait.
But that doesn't matter, because whether I have patience or not these unfolded when they were ready. And I love them.
A surprise gift planted by the previous owners.

Change.
It will always be inevitable, but I think it will always be a shock to my system.
I try, I prepare, I work at it - but I am just not one that takes change lightly.
It throws me sideways and I emerge half-drowned and gasping.
But I emerge.

The HOA note mentioned that the back was going to be reclaimed by the HOA
(at this point, being so overwhelmed, sounds good to me!)
And the beautiful pink rosebush?
That has to go...it's in the way.

Change.
Means hard work.

It means being dug up and shook out like a rag doll and plopped in brand new, cold soil.
With the encouragement: THRIVE!

I was thriving where I was, thank you very much.
But the funny thing?
I really wasn't.
God knows more about where and how I thrive best.
And sometimes that means being completely uprooted, as shocking as that is.

And the empty pots?
New opportunities arise.
Try again.

And when you go outside and find the most pathetic sight of wilted, browning stems and leaves draping over the side of the pot and you desperately drown it in water a miracle happens.
Overnight it found nourishment and strength to rise and grow again.
But not with out some battle scars - some burned edges won't go away.
But it doesn't stop new growth.
You're more resiliant than you think.
And when you think you've hit the bottom.
You haven't.
You need some nourishment. Seek it.
There are lots of "bottoms" out there.
In fact I think they are just temporary ledges before free-falling again.
But there is still hope.
Always hope.
In the ugly-beautiful.
All is grace.

And the giant, green unidentified plant lending us a bit of privacy?
It's a hydrangea.
The first blooms are just peeking out.
My heart is full.

A Deep Breath

I am taking a deep breath.
The silence around here. I've been holding my breath trying to push through.
My word for 2014, Be Still, echoing around because God knew I'd need to be pummeled over the head with that reminder, daily.
Good days and chaotic panicked days too.

As July showed its sunny warm face I realized it has been a wild year.

Living in Kingston. Being stretched in so many ways. Learning a lot about myself: the good, the bad, the ugly. The weaknesses glaringly obvious and in other ways strength, quietly surprising. Learning about "island" living and realizing how much I've grown to love the city. Learning to count beauty in all circumstances because otherwise you'll be swept out to sea while fixating on details and not the big picture. Growth is always a bit painful, no? God working - molding and kneading tough clay. I'm stubborn, but the Holy Spirit doesn't let go. So grateful for the gift it was to live there and work toward some big goals. All possible because of other's generosity.

Buying our home. Oh have mercy - crash-course in real estate jargon and property value and neighborhood ratings and it really just made me want to cry most of the time. While always incredibly amazed and thankful that it was even possible. And just when things looked impossible our home basically fell in our lap. When just about everything that could be delayed and go wrong, did. We pulled through. The stress of that crazy process was intense. But sitting in my living room writing this nearly brings tears to my eyes. Not to mention needing to buy a new car the day we got keys to our first home. I don't think it could have happened any other way - and I didn't realize the stress the old car was causing until I drove in the new one and realized my stomach didn't hurt because I wasn't hoping to make it to the next green light without the car falling apart. But these big grown-up purchases do a number on your sanity.

New position at work. Another crash course in finding out exactly what I'm made of. Learning trial by fire. Long, incredibly full and busy days as extra pieces needed picking up during a short-staffed summer. More trial by fire. Growth. Challenge. More stretching. I love working hard, I love my new commute - making more commuting buddies. Managed to do a Bible Study with the Finance ladies - more encouragement from Beth Moore. Learning hindsight is always 20-20 and new processes are needed. I come home exhausted. Sometimes frustrated. Mostly just tired. Still love learning new things, just seems like it's always the hard way at the moment. Incredibly thankful for this new opportunity and the support I've received. Ready for a less busy season where I just tackle the tasks on my new position. But then again, I am a bit afraid I'll be totally bored... :)

Early June. The tragedy on campus rocked our world and threw my emotions and body into chaos. The stress I'd been operating on finally snapped. Within the week of the campus shooting our family suddenly lost a cherished member. My grief got swept up in survival-mode and pushing through. It felt like I was the captain of three ships without crews all taking on water and I had a bucket trying to bail them all out simultaneously. My will pushed forward, but my body stepped on the brakes and crashed. Eight weeks I battled being sick. Eight weeks is a long time. Battery of tests, x-rays, doctor appointments - and the final answer? Purely a stress response. After a year and some extreme events my body told me I needed to take a break. NOW. I half listened... Still processing everything that's happened. Still learning the necessity of the habit of prayer. SO much to pray for right now. Chaotic, heart-breaking world events next to heart-break within our family. Fear and sickness raging on another continent and right here in our family as my uncle, living in Liberia, underwent emergency surgery to fix a hernia as Ebola threatens the country he loves and serves. Thankful for God's provision of medical care when all of the hospitals are shut down. This world can make you weary and I've forgotten to pray and count gifts. To actively search for beauty and lift up & help the suffering. Working on getting that back.

These ramblings, I suppose, are my attempt to process and debrief what my body told me I can't sweep under the rug anymore. I'm regaining center. Resting. Trying to be still.

Weekly Stills :: Juxtaposed

These few weeks have been trying.
Juxtaposed.
In the words of Ann Voskamp: Ugly Beautiful

News that my Cousin Dennis passed away this week. Which doesn't make sense to me, won't sink in. My heart hurts for his wife and son and our family. I can't fathom that I won't see him again. Wearing the overalls, teaching me how to properly season meat and BBQ. Wishing I could be with the family.

Still processing the tragic events of June 5th that stripped our comfort & safety, yet also brought an incredible closeness and faith that has warmed my heart over and over.
Seattle Espesso Cart handed out free lattes for all students, staff and faculty

Found this outside of admissions - flowers from our neighborhood Safeway

Taking time and space to lament and bear our grief, yet a joyful spirit on campus as families gathered to cheer on their college graduates.
So proud of Brie - officially a Master!
A new position and balancing a heavy hectic workload, yet three different surprise reunions and the space to enjoy them.
Eryn and I grew up next door to each other - so many great memories. We realized I last hugged her when I was twelve!
Exhaustion and emotion, yet sweet surprises from a husband who cares.

I am blessed. I am mourning.
I am excited and utterly overwhelmed.
I am stressed-out sick, yet by some miracle still finding energy and healing.

"The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it." ~John 1:5
There is darkness. But, stronger than that, there is also light.
Praise be to God
